History of Art Deco
Art Deco characteristics originated in the late 1910s in France. Some of the main characteristics are similar to that of geometric, with symmetric shapes and sleek forms from man-made materials.
We also see repetition throughout with many popular styles including floral, sunrays, and animal print. Art Deco expanded into the 1920s during the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes – translating to International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris in 1925.
This was adopted and developed by western culture in Europe and the US during the 1930s, maturing into a well-established art form. We now see art deco in the form of buildings, architecture, and on wallpaper and furniture. Some popular artists within the Art Deco movement include Tamara de Lempicka and Erte.
